A lasting gift
Kitini Higher Secondary School in Nepal is the proud home of a fantastic new mosaic thanks to the generosity of newly-wed couple Gareth and Caroline Robertshaw (pictured left).
Gareth and Caroline - who married last autumn - kindly commissioned something special in lieu of wedding gifts to help us provide meaningful employment to former circus girls and deaf students we have trained as mosaic artists.
Instead of asking for cutlery, crockery, bed linen and blenders, they asked their friends and family to make donations towards a mosaic mural that will serve as a lasting legacy and help to inspire generations of children in Nepal.
While providing a magnificent focal point for students and staff at the school and the wider local community, it also plays an important role in the continuing rehabilitation of the artists - building their self confidence and demonstrating to them just how much progress they have made. Trafficking survivors and deaf people are severely stigmatised by sections of Nepali communities so any initiative that restores their self belief has real value.
The completed mosaic was installed by volunteer artist Dan Newnham to coincide with the couple's honeymoon in Nepal. The Esther Benjamins Trust is grateful to Gareth and Caroline for their selfless gesture of support.
