Celebration to remember
Former Miss Nepal runner-up Sarah Gurung joined children at The Esther Benjamins Trust’s Kathmandu refuge for the Bhai Tika ceremony, part of Nepal’s second largest Hindu festival, Tihar.
Sarah danced and interacted with the children during a very informal programme which saw children and American visitors celebrating the annual occasion when Nepali girls worship their younger brothers with garlands and food.
Ironically Sarah found herself surrounded by girls whose attractive physical appearance had worked against their interests, this being one of the motives for them to be trafficked to Indian circuses. Ostensibly there as performers, the girls were made to wear scanty costumes that drew leers from unsavoury male members of the audiences.
They are now happily rebuilding their lives within our residential refuge which offers a stimulating social programme complemented by education and vocational training initiatives.
