The next Manuel Rivera-Ortiz?

Some of the children we support in Bhairahawa have just successfully completed a four-day documentary photography workshop at our Arts Centre designed to help them embrace creative activities – something that some underprivileged Nepali children have not had the chance to do in their early lives.

We're not yet sure whether we have unearthed the next Manuel Rivera-Ortiz – the documentary photographer who is renowned for images of people in less-developed countries around the world – but we are sure that all of the children had a great time.

Deaf students and former street children were paired together to encourage teamwork and integration and then given the task of producing documentary-style photographs in the surrounding neighbourhood.

The sessions were led by professional photographer Peter Sutherland who was supported by local volunteers Maia Ruth Lee and Alice Wellum. All have generously volunteered their services to EBT.

The children noticeably grew in confidence as the sessions progressed, and were given the opportunity to share feedback sessions before going out into the field again to apply what they had learned.

We hope this course will serve as a precursor to an extended workshop as a part of the broader range of art programmes we offer at the Bhairahawa Arts Centre.
