When we rescued the children in the circus, we also found a 22-year-old Nepali woman.

It transpires that she was trafficked into the circus 14 years ago, forced to bear 3 children to the now-deceased brother of the circus owner and endure abuse.

She was so accustomed to living in fear that Founder Philip Holmes and EBMF director Shailaja CM gently gave her reassurances that she would not be abandoned again if she opted for freedom.

EBT team rescues nine

Nine young people - eight of whom are minors - have been freed from the horrors of an Indian circus following a rescue mission by EBT working in conjunction with Indian police and authorities.

While we had hoped last year to have tracked down every Indian circus utilising trafficked Nepali children, we always kept an ear to the ground; given the sheer size of India and the fact that these circuses are often touring entities, there can be some that remain off the radar.

When we learned that there might be trafficked children in the New Diamond Circus set up at Merapani in the Assam region of India, we acted swiftly.

Of the nine people rescued, four were Nepali children who will soon be returning to the country of their birth. The only adult rescued was 22 years old - her story is told to the left.

The rescue has been covered in full detail in Nepali newspaper, Republica.
