Secondary Schools
Everyone has the occasional day when the idea of going to school is a chore. Maybe the day’s lessons aren’t your favourite; maybe your homework was a bit too rushed and you’re not looking forward to the repercussions. Whatever the reason, it is human nature to sometimes wish for something different.
However, most of us in this country and other rich countries around the world are privileged to enjoy a good education and the great opportunities it can help to create. We have dedicated teachers, a range of resources and the chance to participate in a variety of curricular and extra-curricular activities that are interesting and sometimes even fun.
In marked contrast, there are children in the world who have never seen the inside of a classroom. In Nepal, for example, where The Esther Benjamins Trust works, many children’s families are so poor that the kids have to help every day in the field just to ensure that there is food on the table for everyone each evening.
Others still are so desperate that the children are sold by their parents to trafficking agents for as little as £15. These children are then taken away and forced to work and live in disgusting and dangerous environments.
The children we rescue are taken away from their families and across the border into India, where they are sold to circus owners. Forced to perform dangerous tricks and very often beaten if they make a mistake, these children would probably love the opportunity to wish they didn’t have to go to school – in reality, they will never enjoy an education that can help them to escape poverty unless someone is prepared to help them.
We would like your class or house to get involved. Simply by discussing the issues of poverty and child trafficking you can begin to see how difficult some people’s lives are in relation to our own. You could even organise events that help to raise awareness of the problems some children in Nepal endure, and in the process help us to change more lives for the better.
