ART REACHES NEW STUDENTS
Students from the school
for deaf children we support in Bhairahawa have been participating
in a new initiative designed to enable them to acquire a broader
range of skills as they near the end of their education.
Like many of the survivors of child
trafficking we have rescued, these young people are stigmatised
by Nepali society through absolutely no fault of their own. Their
deafness is unjustly perceived as stupidity, leading many to be
rejected by their own communities and denied an education.
The school has been a huge success,
and to complement the children’s education, the vocational
art skills we have taught to many former circus girls have now been
expanded to encompass deaf students in Bhairahawa.
Already, they are making great progress
and enjoying the freedom to express their feelings through art,
helped by two of our leading artists, Manju and Reena with the aid
of a deaf teacher who can sign to the students. EBT staff member
Camilla Kinchin and volunteer Holly Wheaton are also in Bhairahawa
helping to coordinate the lessons.
Further pictures from the
course will be posted on this page in the coming days.
