DEAF SCHOOL DEVELOPMENTS
We are now funding two new teachers at the School for Deaf
Children in Bhairahawa.
This has enabled them to open Class
9 for the first time, and next year will see these children progress
in to Class 10 culminating in them appearing for the School
Leaving Certificate (SLC) (the Nepali equivalent of GCSEs) in
March 2009.
This is a huge success for EBT: when we first
became involved the school was only operating as far as Class
5!
The school will become only the third one in Nepal to
offer SLC to deaf children (after the far more affluent Kathmandu
and Pokhara Schools).
Thanks to the Lions Club of Tjerk Hiddes Harlingen/Franeker
in Holland we have been able to build a new kitchen and dining
room for the school hostel; previously the children ate in
shifts in the corridor.
As part of the project new toilets
are also being built. Before over 150 children shared just
two toilets that were regularly blocked, now these four new
toilets will lead into a new BioGas plant that will create
methane to cook on.
Currently we estimate that they use at
least to 20 tonnes of firewood a year.
Chandra has been selected for the 200-metre race and the relay event
in China, having won many medals and trophies in his preferred 200m
and Shot Put at National Level events in Kathmandu over the last
couple of years.
